Ertuğrul Gazi is the father of Osman Bey, the leader of the Kayı tribe of the Oghuzs and the founder of the Ottoman Principality. The Kayı people, who escaped from the Mongol oppression of Genghis Khan in Central Asia, first came to Eastern Anatolia in the 13th century.
